Plumber in Suffolk Park, NSW

Working across Suffolk Park, from the old beach grid to Baywood Chase

Suffolk Park is a coastal village about five kilometres south of Byron Bay, with Tallow Beach along its eastern edge. Our work sits in three parts. The old beach grid around Alcorn Street was laid out in 1922 but only filled with houses in the building boom of the 1970s. The streets around Clifford Street and Broken Head Road have the shops, the pub and the pharmacy. West of Broken Head Road, Byron Hills and Baywood Chase were added in the early 1990s as planned estates with many cul-de-sacs.

The cul-de-sacs in Byron Hills and Baywood Chase have one way in and out, so we ask for the exact street and house number before we set off. The bigger question is water. Suffolk Park sits in the catchment of Tallow Creek, a lagoon that meets the sea just south of Byron Bay. Many properties in the suburb flooded in March 2022, when spring tides slowed the water leaving the creek. We ask whether your yard is a low one, because a line that has been under water needs checking before it is relied on again.

Suffolk Park filled with houses in one burst. The 1922 estate still had gravel streets and houses on only a few lots in 1958. The population then went from 239 in 1976 to 1,221 in 1991, and the early nineties estates followed. A house from that boom has its original pipes behind the walls unless someone has replaced them, so the age of the house is the first thing we ask. Council's West Byron sewage plant serves Suffolk Park, so we expect the house drain to join a sewer main near the front boundary.

What we do here most

What a suburb built in one burst keeps needing

Most of Suffolk Park went up between the mid seventies and the early nineties, so age shows up in the pipes all together. The low ground beside Tallow Creek adds a second pattern, water that cannot leave quickly.

Sewer and Stormwater Drainage

Yard drain slow to empty beside Tallow Creek

Suffolk Park sits in the catchment of Tallow Creek, and water leaves a low yard slowly when the creek is high. We find the yard pit, lift the lid and see whether it is holding water, silt or both. Then we follow the line toward the street to see where it stops running. A line that has stood under water gets looked at all the way before we say it is sound.

Leak Detection and Repairs

Warm patch on the floor of a seventies house

A house from the mid 1970s boom is now more than forty years old, and its pipes are the same age unless someone has changed them. If the house is on a slab and a hot water line has failed under it, one patch of floor can feel warm underfoot. We trace the line from the tank, listen along the floor and mark the loudest spot. We cut the floor only there.

Blocked Drain Clearing

Gurgling toilet at the sewer connection

In a street house the drain runs out toward the sewer connection near the front boundary. When a toilet gurgles as a basin empties, the blockage can be in that last stretch. We open the access point nearest the boundary, clear toward the connection and run water to watch it leave. If it keeps coming back, a camera is the next step.

Bathroom and Kitchen Plumbing

Replacing a vanity in a Baywood Chase bathroom

Houses in Byron Hills and Baywood Chase went up in the early 1990s, so a bathroom there is over thirty years old. The taps, flexible hoses and isolating valves behind the vanity are as old as the house unless someone has swapped them. We close the stop tap, take the old vanity out and see what is behind it. If any fittings have corroded, you hear about it before we fit anything new.

If it is urgent

If a pipe lets go in a Suffolk Park house near Tallow Creek

  1. 1Close the stop tap, usually in the meter box near the front boundary, and open a tap or two to let the pressure out of the pipes. Switch off a leaking appliance at the wall if the switch is dry.
  2. 2Leave the drain pits in the yard and the street alone, and do not dig for the pipe or cut into a wall. If creek or street water is coming into the yard, keep out of it and away from power points.
  3. 3When you ring, tell us the street and whether it is in the old beach grid, around Clifford Street, or west of Broken Head Road. Tell us the year the house was built if you know it, and whether your yard is a low one.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Which areas do you cover?

We work across Byron Bay and the Northern Rivers, from Ewingsdale and Bangalow through to Tweed Heads and Murwillumbah. There are sixteen places on the service areas page. If your town is not on the list, give us a call and ask.

How do I get in touch?

Use the call and email buttons on any page, or the contact form. There are two phone numbers and two email addresses, and you choose which one to use. For anything urgent, call rather than write.

What should I have ready when I call?

Your town, what is happening and when it started. If you can, take a photo or a short video of the problem, and note the age of the house and where the water main is. It helps us bring the right parts.

Do you do small jobs?

Yes. A dripping tap, a running toilet or a slow drain is a normal job for us. Describe what you can see when you call.

Can you clear a blocked drain without digging?

Often the first step is to clear it from the nearest access point, then run a camera through to see what caused it. If the pipe is cracked, roots have grown in or a section has dropped, clearing only buys time, and the footage shows you what is going on.

What should I do if a pipe bursts?

Close the main tap, open a tap at the lowest point to drain the line, and switch off a leaking hot water system at the wall. Move anything electrical out of the water's path, then call us.

Can you find a leak I cannot see?

Hidden leaks often show up as damp patches, a water meter that moves when everything is turned off, or a bill that suddenly jumps. We trace the pipework to find the source before anything is opened up.

Do you repair hot water systems as well as replace them?

Yes, we do both. Whether a repair or a replacement makes sense depends on what has failed, and we explain what we find so you can decide.

What should I do if I smell gas?

Leave the area straight away and do not switch anything on or off, including lights. Ring 000 from outside, then call us once you are safe.

Do you do gas fitting?

Yes. Gas fitting and gas plumbing is one of our services, from connecting appliances to running pipework. Describe the job when you call.

Do you install septic systems?

Yes, septic system installation is one of our services. The job depends on the block, so tell us about your property and what you have now when you call.

Do you do bathroom and kitchen plumbing for renovations?

Yes, the plumbing side: moving and connecting taps, basins, toilets, showers, sinks and waste. Tiling and building are for other trades.

Local, and on the phone

Tell us which part of Suffolk Park you are in

Tell us whether the house is in the old beach grid, near the shops on Clifford Street, or west of Broken Head Road in Byron Hills or Baywood Chase. If you know the year it was built, add that too, because it tells us what to expect behind the walls.
