Plumber in Casuarina, NSW

Working across Casuarina's planned streets, villas and the dune parkland

Casuarina is one planned suburb along 3.5 kilometres of ocean frontage between Kingscliff and Cabarita Beach. It has been built in stages from 1999 on a former sand mine, with Tweed Coast Road along its inland side. Along the ocean side runs a strip of dune parkland, and there is a nine hectare sports and recreation centre. The Commons Casuarina is the shopping hub. Most of the housing is low or medium density, so the work is in detached houses, villas and apartments.

Casuarina is a mix of detached houses, villas and apartments, and in a villa or apartment group the first question is who holds the gate remote or the key. Tell us where a van can stand without blocking a shared drive. The ground under the suburb is sand from the old mine, so tell us what is buried near the work, such as irrigation lines or cables, before we put a spade in. If the job is at the back of a unit, tell us how we reach it.

The first stage of the suburb went up from 1999, so the first houses are now around twenty five years old and the fittings from that first stage have done a long stretch of service. Council's planning papers for the area describe stormwater running east to a coastal swale and into infiltration basins, so rain is meant to soak away into the sand. Villas and apartments often share a drain line between several homes.

What we do here most

What a young suburb built on old sand keeps needing

Casuarina is planned, young and built on sand, and these four jobs follow from those three facts.

Sewer and Stormwater Drainage

Stormwater pits silted up in a sandy suburb

Casuarina's drainage was planned to let rain soak into sand, which works until the pits fill with sediment and leaf litter. After a storm, a pit still holding water the next morning is the sign. We lift the lid, clear the sand and debris, and run water through the outlet to see that it drains away. If the pipe has dropped or cracked, we show you before we dig.

Hot Water System Repairs and Installation

An original hot water unit that is worn out

A hot water system from the first stage of building has now run for a long time. The signs are rust coloured water, a dripping relief valve line, or a unit that takes much longer to heat. We look at the tank, the valves and the connections, and tell you whether it can be repaired or the tank itself has gone. If it has to be replaced, we explain what that involves before we start.

Leak Detection and Repairs

A damp patch in a ground floor villa

In a villa or townhouse, pipes can run in the floor and in the wall between two homes, so a leak may show up on a neighbour's side first. We close the water at the meter and watch whether the dial still moves, then listen along the pipes to find the wet point. We tell you whether the pipe serves one home or both before any lining comes off.

Drain Camera Inspections

A camera down a line shared by several homes

A blocked drain at one unit that keeps coming back often has its cause further down a shared line. We put the camera in through the nearest access point and follow the line toward the street. On the screen we can see sand, roots, a dropped joint or a pipe from another home joining in. You see the same picture we do, and we decide the next step together.

If it is urgent

If a pipe lets go in a Casuarina villa or unit

  1. 1Close the stop tap for your home, which is usually at the meter near the front of the block or in the common area of a complex. Switch off any leaking appliance at the wall.
  2. 2Leave shared drains alone. If a drain is backing up, stop flushing and stop running taps, because the water can come up in the home next door.
  3. 3When you ring, tell us the street, whether you have a house, villa or apartment, roughly when it was built, whether the pipe or drain is shared with a neighbour, and who holds the gate remote or the key.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Which areas do you cover?

We work across Byron Bay and the Northern Rivers, from Ewingsdale and Bangalow through to Tweed Heads and Murwillumbah. There are sixteen places on the service areas page. If your town is not on the list, give us a call and ask.

How do I get in touch?

Use the call and email buttons on any page, or the contact form. There are two phone numbers and two email addresses, and you choose which one to use. For anything urgent, call rather than write.

What should I have ready when I call?

Your town, what is happening and when it started. If you can, take a photo or a short video of the problem, and note the age of the house and where the water main is. It helps us bring the right parts.

Do you do small jobs?

Yes. A dripping tap, a running toilet or a slow drain is a normal job for us. Describe what you can see when you call.

Can you clear a blocked drain without digging?

Often the first step is to clear it from the nearest access point, then run a camera through to see what caused it. If the pipe is cracked, roots have grown in or a section has dropped, clearing only buys time, and the footage shows you what is going on.

What should I do if a pipe bursts?

Close the main tap, open a tap at the lowest point to drain the line, and switch off a leaking hot water system at the wall. Move anything electrical out of the water's path, then call us.

Can you find a leak I cannot see?

Hidden leaks often show up as damp patches, a water meter that moves when everything is turned off, or a bill that suddenly jumps. We trace the pipework to find the source before anything is opened up.

Do you repair hot water systems as well as replace them?

Yes, we do both. Whether a repair or a replacement makes sense depends on what has failed, and we explain what we find so you can decide.

What should I do if I smell gas?

Leave the area straight away and do not switch anything on or off, including lights. Ring 000 from outside, then call us once you are safe.

Do you do gas fitting?

Yes. Gas fitting and gas plumbing is one of our services, from connecting appliances to running pipework. Describe the job when you call.

Do you install septic systems?

Yes, septic system installation is one of our services. The job depends on the block, so tell us about your property and what you have now when you call.

Do you do bathroom and kitchen plumbing for renovations?

Yes, the plumbing side: moving and connecting taps, basins, toilets, showers, sinks and waste. Tiling and building are for other trades.

Tell us about your home in Casuarina

Tell us whether the drain or pipe you are worried about is shared with a neighbour, and roughly what year the place was built. That decides whether we plan for one home or several, and what we expect to find.
